about
On February 13th 2013, The Chaperones and I busked in the Downtown Eastside. I wrote a song about this neighbourhood with my brother Kevin Coles, with the intention of being part of the conversation and potentially helping in some small way. I got in touch with Mark Brand from Save-On-Meats and he offered to help us. We busked in front of his shop, made some cash, exchanged that money for sandwich tokens and distributed them to people in the neighbourhood. We shot a video and are putting the single up on Bandcamp with proceeds going to Union Gospel Mission (www.ugm.ca/donate), Battered Women's Support Services (www.bwss.org/donate), Project Limelight (www.projectlimelightsociety.org/support) and Directions Youth Services (www.fsgv.ca/donations/index.php).
lyrics
Livin' in the streets
No cash money
Gas on empty
Ya still have that dream
Sometimes, Sometimes
Where the lights go green
And the sun shines in
Then love intervenes
So ya get what ya need
Sometimes, Sometimes
We get it right
The needle, the bottle
I get it we ain't all angels
Who you to tell me what's the difference
Between who's a saint and a sinner?
We get it we get it we get it...
Livin' in the streets
No cash money
Gas on empty
Ya still have that dream
Sometimes, Sometimes
Where the lights go green
And the sun shines in
Then love intervenes
So ya get what ya need
Sometimes, Sometimes
We get it right, when we get it right, we get right
We get it right, when we get it right, we get right
Heroin, methamphetamine cocaine
Plain view, shootin' it up until there's no vein
Pickton pickin' em' up in the sex trade
Ain't DJ's with the needle exchange
People are strange when you're a stranger
Better get acquainted with the threat of the danger
Thread of the anger, head of the dagger
Either down to help or you're only gonna aggravate
Where we livin' is great but the minimum wage help criminals play
if you in it ok, and you willin' to change
Cause the Downtown Eastside's feelin' the pain
It'll get worse if we let it
But we can get it right so let's get it
We get it, we get it, we get it
Livin' in the streets
No cash money
Gas on empty
Ya still have that dream
Sometimes, Sometimes
Where the lights go green
And the sun shines in
Then love intervenes
So ya get what ya need
Sometimes, Sometimes
We get right, when we get it right, we get right
We get right, when we get it right, we get right
Just walking away from the people
The problem follows
Remember the soul of us all
Keeps movin' on.
The needle, the bottle
I get it we ain't all angels
Who you to tell me what's the difference
Between who's a saint and a sinner?
We get it we get it we get it...
Livin' in the streets
No cash money
Gas on empty
Ya still have that dream
Sometimes, Sometimes
Where the lights go green
And the sun shines in
Then love intervenes
So ya get what ya need
Sometimes, Sometimes
We get right, when we get it right, we get right
We get right, when we get it right, we get right
